Fitness & A Healthy Lifestyle

I grew up in a native New Mexican family whose daily meals consisted of butter laden warm tortillas, fried potatoes, chile con carne (meat with chile) and decadent desserts.  My mother's cooking is the by far the best (I am sure most children would regard their mother's cooking all the same) and I freely admit that I love food.  It wasn't until I met my husband (certified personal trainer and nutritionist) that I learned how unhealthy I was eating.  With his help, I was able to drop 20 pounds and decrease my body fat to 19.3% in a 3-month time frame.  After 4 pregnancies (including a twin pregnancy) my muscle tone remains high and I maintain a fit lifestyle.  I don't eat chicken and broccoli for every meal...instead I work out hard 5 days per week.  This section is dedicated to inspiring those who strive for a healthy lifestyle without total deprivation from the cultural foods they love!

My Workout History

My husband was a personal trainer and nutritionist and when I met him.  I thought the whole healthy eating and exercising thing was for the birds.  He educated me and guided me towards the fitness light, and 3 months after I implemented his program I lost 18 lbs!  Of course, I was 19 years old with no children - so transforming my body was easy at that point.

After my first child, I had lost all of my weight by my 4th months post partum.  I hardly even tried.  Of course I had exercised throughout my entire pregnancy so I think that helped.  With number 2, I went below my pre-pregnancy weight by 6 months post partum...of course I maintained a healthy diet and exercised, but that was also a completely stressful time in my life.  While lighter, I don't think I was at my healthiest.  Skinniest, perhaps, but not healthiest.

After my third child I didn't lose weight as quickly.  I continued to exercise and eat healthy, but everything seemed to shed slowly.  While I got down size wise, I never quite went all the way back down weight wise.  I then got pregnant with the twins when the baby was 12 months old.  I was about 10 lbs above where I wanted to be, and the twin pregnancy required a 50 lb gain.

Now my twins are a year (15 months to be exact), and at 7 months post partum I had shed all my twin pregnancy gain.  Shortly after that, I was fortunate enough to have the ability to work with a personal trainer.  I trained for 3 months and saw great results...but still can't get those last pounds off.  In terms of aesthetics, I am happy.  I have muscular definition in my entire body, especially my legs.  I am stronger and can even do a couple of pull ups.  Now I still workout 3-4 times daily focusing on weight training and running.  I feel I have come to a plateau, and am currently hoping to start the Insanity DVD program.  I'll keep you updated on how it works!
